The term ‘Enemy’ is used many a time in several places in various contexts. Majority of the people say they have an enemy. If we ask who your enemy is, we would get different kinds of answers. Let us start from the home. Some would say my husband is the enemy. Some others would say their neighbors are their enemies. Tamil Nadu would say Karnataka is its enemy. India might say Pakistan is its enemy. No wonder, the India Vs Pakistan cricket match is the most sought after match over the all the others. George W. Bush would say Bin Laden is his enemy and Bin Laden, vice versa. In fact, how long will they be enemies of one other? Answer is till they are alive. After death, there is no enemy and no avenge. A poet once said, “His anger itself is his enemy”. Here the poet could identify only one root element as his enemy and which is quite a true as well. Even the whole world thinks so. However, there are many such things in the Bible that the poet and the world may not know. Let us get into the Bible.Galatians 5:19-21 “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God”
What does it mean? There are many things apart from anger. Each one is equally lethal as the other. A bomb may kill a man or destroy a country. However, these bombs would kill him, others and his own soul. Did you know one who has any of the above is disqualified to enter into the Heaven; On the other hand he keeps getting burnt in the Hell for ever. What is that factory where all these vices are being made? That is none other than our 6 ft and 60 kg body. This is the warehouse of it all.
Mark 7:23 “All these evil things proceed from within the body and defile the man”.
If someone has to call for war, it has to be initiated in a body. If someone has to be murdered, it has to be planned in a body. If something to be robbed, that has to be decided in a body. Yes!! The root to of it all is the body which is self-entered.
James 4:1 “Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?”
So what can we say about this horrible and dangerous moveable warehouse? While writing to the Romans, Paul says
Romans 7:18-21 “For I know that in me (that is in my flesh) nothing good dwells;”
Now I hope you understand who your enemy is. It’s neither your relatives nor your neighbors nor your neighboring state / country at all. Indeed it is your body itself that has turned out to be your ENEMY.
Galatians 5:17 “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would”
Only one who can overcome this enemy can be a friend of God. Hence the question remains how do we overcome this kind of an enemy? How to prevent all these evil things to generate in a body? Is there any medicine or antibiotic which can kill the root? And what is this root by the way? It is the very beginning; an ‘idea’ or a ‘thought’ takes shape in the heart initially and finds its way out through actions finally. So we should be careful to check it at the root itself. Interestingly, we don’t find such a medicine in any pharmacies of the world that can correct our heart and the thoughts that emerge from it. But in the Bible, the book of life, there is a medicine for this.
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
Oh! Wonderful, absolutely this is what we’ve been searching for. That’s why David in Psalms says,
Psalms 119:11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
Romans 8:13 “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”
Galatians 5:16 “I say then: walk in the spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
If you allow your body to rule you, you (you here mean soul) will be ruled out of the kingdom of God. Therefore, rule your body by walking in the spirit and get rid of all your enemies if you have. Let us check ourselves in the light of the word of God and crucify everything that is contrary to His will for us. Only then can we be fully transformed into the people we ought to be and reach the place that God has for us. Otherwise, we might be left behind, entangled in unwanted messes when Christ comes again. Perhaps, you might be an expert in writing programs using software and hardware and executing them successfully. But nowhere can you find a program which reads you and gives you the actual result. Only the Bible is aware all of it all. Surrender yourself (& your enemies) before God with the help of Spirit and Word of God and let His friendship invade every part of your being. All the best!
